The end of the second generation. The 2022 update refreshed the styling and the cabin and made Volkswagen's IQ.DRIVE driver assistance package standard across the lineup. These cars still offer the third row, and a lot of them have cycled back into the used market, so there is real choice. Confirm the exact equipment on any individual car by its window sticker.
2019 to 2021Best value entry
Mid second generation. Same long wheelbase body, same 184 hp 2.0L TSI, same third row availability, without the refresh. This is the cheapest way into a Tiguan that can carry six or seven people in a pinch. Buy the one with the thickest service file, not the lowest miles.
2024 and newerBest if you want current
The third generation. New platform, a much bigger central touchscreen, more power, and IQ.DRIVE standard. Two rows only. Many are still inside the original factory warranty and are eligible for Certified Pre-Owned, which matters if you want coverage that outlasts your next duty station.
Through 2017Smallest and simplest
The first generation, a genuinely compact five seat SUV that drives like a tall hatchback. Easy to park at Coastal Carolina Community College or the Jacksonville Mall lot. The Tiguan is not one car with a rolling refresh. The version sold in the United States changed shape twice, and the middle generation is the odd one out, because Volkswagen stretched it for North America and put a third row in it.

The practical read for a used shopper: the third row lives and dies with the second generation. If a seven seat Tiguan is what you came for, you are shopping 2018 through 2023 and nothing else. If it is not, the second generation's main advantage over a first generation car is size and safety equipment, and the third generation beats both on technology.
One more thing worth saying plainly. R-Line badging on a Tiguan is a styling package, not a suspension or performance upgrade. Black exterior trim, bigger wheels, sportier interior accents. The one exception is the SEL R-Line Turbo added on the current generation for 2026, where the badge does come with a stronger engine. Do not pay for R-Line expecting it to change how the car drives on NC-24.
How to date a Tiguan in a parking lot
The first generation is obviously smaller and rounder. The second generation is the long one with the squared off rear quarter and a tailgate that reads almost like a small wagon. The third generation dropped the hard creases for a smoother nose and a light bar across the front.
If you are not sure, the interior settles it. A second generation dashboard is built around physical climate controls and a screen sitting in the dash. The third generation moved to a large landscape screen and a rotary controller on the console.

The third row question, answered honestly
Only the second generation Tiguan offered a third row in the United States, and it was not fitted to every car. Whether the one you are looking at has one depends on its model year, trim and drivetrain. That is why you check the car, not the model year.
Two ways to be sure in under a minute. Lift the cargo floor panel and look for the folded seat back down in the well. Or give us the VIN and we will pull the original window sticker for that exact vehicle.
Now the honest part. It is a small third row. It is fine for two kids on the run out to Swansboro or down to Surf City. It is not where you put two Marines for the drive to Wilmington. Anyone telling you otherwise has never sat back there.
The second trade off is cargo. With the third row up, the space behind it is close to nothing. You get seven seats or you get a full cargo hold, not both at once. If you regularly need six or seven people and their gear, the honest recommendation is to step up to a three row SUV rather than stretch a Tiguan into a job it was not built for. What to check on a used Tiguan test drive in Jacksonville
A used car checklist written for the coast is not the same as one written for Charlotte. Salt air, August humidity and deployment layup all leave marks, and all three are normal here. Work through these in order.
- Start it cold. Ask that the car be sitting cold when you arrive. Listen through the first ten seconds and watch the mirror for smoke.
- Load the turbo. Get out on US-17 or NC-24 and run it up to highway speed. Power should build steadily with no flat spot and no hesitation.
- Work the transmission in traffic. Every US Tiguan uses a conventional automatic, not a dual clutch. Stop and go on Western Boulevard is the honest test for smooth shifts, cold and warm.
- Run the air conditioning on max for ten minutes. An eastern North Carolina August is unforgiving, and a weak system is a real cost, not a quirk.
- Hunt for water. Panoramic roofs are common from the SE grade up. Slide the shade back, press the headliner corners, and lift the carpet in the spare tire well. Damp or a musty smell is the thing you are looking for.
- Look underneath. Cars that lived near Onslow Beach, Sneads Ferry or Topsail have breathed salt air. Check brake lines, exhaust hardware and suspension fasteners.
- Test every electrical item one at a time. Infotainment, both key fobs, all four windows, the power tailgate, the backup camera, and the touch sensitive steering wheel controls on refreshed second generation cars.
- Read the tires. Uneven wear points at alignment or hard pothole hits. Check the date codes too. A car parked through a deployment can show deep tread on tires that are years old.
- Run the VIN for open recalls. Any used vehicle from any brand can have an open safety recall. It is a free lookup and it takes a minute.
The PCS factor
Jacksonville turns over vehicles faster than most markets. A Tiguan here may have had three owners in six years, and it may have sat for eight months while its owner was deployed. Neither is disqualifying. Both are reasons to inspect the car properly rather than trust the odometer.

Why service records matter more on a turbocharged Volkswagen
Every Tiguan sold in the United States is turbocharged. A turbo runs hot and it lives in the engine oil. That makes the oil service record the most valuable page in the folder, and it is the page most private sellers cannot produce.
What a good file looks like:
- Oil changes on schedule, with oil that meets the Volkswagen specification for that engine, and no long unexplained gaps.
- Cooling system and spark plug work done when the maintenance schedule called for it, not after something went wrong.
- Any intake cleaning noted. Carbon buildup over time is a normal characteristic of direct injection turbo engines, not a defect. A documented car is one where you know whether it has been looked at.
- Tires, brakes and alignment dated, so you can tell what is due next rather than guessing.

These are not better and worse. They are two different products for two different plans, and the right one depends mostly on how long the car stays with you.

Best when you are keeping the car past the original factory warranty, when you want a known history, or when you would rather not budget for surprises.
Plain used
A wider set of cars, including trade ins from other brands that came through our doors. More model years and more equipment combinations to choose from, and the freedom to have an independent inspection done on whatever you pick.
Best when you know what you are looking at, when you want a specific older configuration, or when the car has a defined job for a defined stretch of time.
How we would put it
Certified Pre-Owned is not automatically the right answer. It is an inspection and a warranty, and both cost something. If orders are likely to move you in eighteen months and the car goes with you or gets sold on, that coverage may never get used. If this is the car you plan to still be driving after the next duty station, it usually earns its place.
The real decision
Older loaded Tiguan or newer base Tiguan
This is where most people actually get stuck. A well equipped older SEL grade car and a newer S or SE grade car often sit side by side on the same used lot, and they are not the same purchase at all.
The older, higher grade car
You get the equipment right now. Leather appointed seating, the panoramic roof, upgraded audio, better lighting, bigger wheels. On a second generation SEL grade car that adds up to a genuinely comfortable interior in a compact SUV.
What you take on: more miles, more parts that have been cycling for longer, and tires that cost more to replace because the wheels are bigger. Onslow County back roads are not smooth, and a 20 inch wheel feels every one of them.
The newer, base grade car
Fewer miles, more of the original factory warranty still running, the newest driver assistance and infotainment, and a real shot at Certified Pre-Owned eligibility. On the current generation, the standard equipment list is strong enough that base does not feel stripped.
What you give up: heated seats, the panoramic roof and the sound system, depending on model year and grade. Decide whether those are things you actually use daily or things that sound good on a spec sheet.
The rule we give people
If the Tiguan is your daily commute up Marine Boulevard or in from Richlands and Hubert and you plan to keep it, take the newer base car. If the comfort equipment is genuinely what you want, and you have a real inspection and a real service history in hand, the older higher grade car is the better use of the money. What you should not do is buy an older loaded car with no paperwork because the features list looked good.
