And speaking of leasing, we often get questions about terminating car leases due to military orders. So, today we'll answer all your questions about it.Â
Can I get out of a car lease due to military orders?Â
Yes! You can get out of a car lease due to military orders or if you're an active duty service member. The SCRA was passed by Congress for this exact reason and to safeguard your rights as a member of the US military.
What is the SCRA?
The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) is a federal law designed to protect the legal and financial rights of active-duty service members and their families. Under the provisions of the law, as long as you meet certain eligibility criteria, you can terminate your lease.Â
How do I know if I'm eligible to get out of my lease?
There are two types of eligibility criteria for getting out of your lease due to military orders:
Pre-Active Duty Leases
If you entered into a lease before you received military orders, you may be eligible to terminate the lease if you're called to serve for 180 days or more.
Active Duty Leases
If you entered into a lease when you received military orders, you may be eligible to terminate your lease under certain conditions, such as Permanent Change of Station (PCS) orders that deploy you outside the Continental United States, or if your deployment orders are for 180 days or more.
What's the process to terminate my lease?
We, at Sport Durst Volkswagen of Jacksonville, make it super easy, barely an inconvenience for our military heroes to terminate their lease when they're under military orders. Just a few quick and easy steps!:Â
Send A Written Notice about terminating your lease along with a copy of your military orders.
Then Verify Military Status through the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act Centralized (SCRA) Verification Service. We'll help you do this.
Return The Vehicle and you're good to go! You could also sublease your vehicle to a third party if you don't want to give it up. Speak to a Sport Durst staff member if you're interested.Â
