Second-row captain's chairs are available on the Atlas SE with Technology and on every trim above it. They are not offered on the base SE.

On the 2026 Atlas that means SE with Technology, Peak Edition, SEL and SEL Premium R-Line. On the 2027 Atlas it means SE with Technology, SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line. The rule is the same in both model years: SE with Technology and above.

No. On every trim that offers them, they are a factory option you add when the vehicle is built. There is no Atlas trim that comes with captain's chairs as standard equipment.

The standard second row on every Atlas, from SE to SEL Premium R-Line, is the three-passenger 60/40 split bench. That is why a specific vehicle on a lot either has them or does not, and you cannot tell from the trim badge alone.

Six. The captain's chairs replace the three-passenger second-row bench with two individual seats, so the Atlas goes from seven seats to six.

No. The SE is the one trim in the lineup where captain's chairs are not on the option sheet, in both the 2026 and 2027 model years.

If captain's chairs are a requirement, the SE with Technology is the lowest trim that can have them. That is worth knowing before you start shopping, because it changes which listings are even candidates.

A walkway. With two individual seats there is an open aisle between them, so a child can get to the third row without anyone folding or sliding a seat forward. On a school run with three kids, that is the difference between thirty seconds and three minutes.

You also get two second-row passengers who are not sharing an armrest, which matters more on a long drive than it sounds. What you give up is one seat and the ability to put three across.

The seventh seat, and the ability to seat three people or fit three car seats across the second row. For a family of six that is nothing. For a family of seven, or one that regularly carries other people's kids, it is the whole decision.

The standard bench is also not a downgrade in its own right. It splits 60/40, reclines 14 degrees, and each side slides 7.7 inches independently, so you can trade second-row legroom for third-row legroom on either side.

Yes, and this is usually the real reason people want them. The gap between the two seats gives a standing-height path straight back, so nobody has to move a seat to load the third row.

The bench is not bad at this either. Its folding mechanism tilts and slides forward from both sides, and Volkswagen states it works even with a child seat installed. Captain's chairs simply remove the step entirely.

Count the headrests in the second row. Three headrests is the bench. Two headrests with a gap between the seats is the captain's chairs option.

No, and it cannot. The Atlas Cross Sport is a two-row vehicle with a five-passenger layout, so there is no three-across second-row bench to replace and no third row to walk through to.

No. Cargo volume is unchanged: 20.6 cubic feet behind the third row, 55.5 with the third row folded, and 96.6 with both rear rows down.

Towing is set by trim and equipment, not by seating. On the 2026 Atlas, SE with Technology and above are rated at 5,000 pounds with a braked trailer and include a factory-installed trailer hitch, while the base SE is rated at 2,000 pounds with an aftermarket hitch.
